About Orlampaland

Make Believe Better

Orlampaland is a place that exists somewhere between history, folklore, roadside attractions, front porch conversations, and the stories we tell ourselves about where we live.

It began with a simple idea: Florida is more than theme parks, traffic reports, and headlines. Hidden beneath the surface is a region filled with strange landmarks, forgotten histories, local legends, family traditions, neighborhood festivals, old diners, fishing stories, orange groves, giant roadside attractions, and communities that still carry a distinct sense of place.

We call that place Orlampaland.

Not because it appears on any official map, but because sometimes the best places are the ones people create together.

Orlampaland is a community storytelling project dedicated to celebrating the people, places, culture, history, and imagination of Florida. Through articles, videos, photography, zines, artwork, maps, events, and conversations, we explore what makes this corner of the world unique and worth preserving.

We believe communities are built through shared stories. We believe local history matters. We believe small businesses, neighborhood traditions, family-owned restaurants, county fairs, fishing piers, old motels, citrus stands, bowling alleys, and roadside oddities deserve to be remembered. We believe a place becomes stronger when the people living there feel connected to it. These ideas echo the way regional storytelling and cultural organizations use stories to strengthen identity, preserve heritage, and build community connections.

Our Philosophy

Orlampaland is serious about community, but not always serious about itself.

We believe imagination has value.

We believe curiosity is a civic virtue.

We believe every town has stories worth telling.

We believe local culture is created by ordinary people doing ordinary things.

We believe history should be accessible, fun, and connected to everyday life.

We believe that preserving the past helps us understand the future.

Most of all, we believe places become better when the people who live there care enough to tell their stories.

Why “Orlampaland”?

The name is intentionally a little ridiculous.

Like many great Florida attractions, it feels like it might have been painted on a roadside billboard sometime in 1967.

Orlampaland is not a government designation. It is not a county. It is not a tourism district.

It is a cultural region, a storytelling region, and sometimes a state of mind.

It stretches across familiar places and forgotten corners, connecting communities through shared experiences, local pride, and a willingness to look at Florida with fresh eyes.
