Carry the Flame

Carry the Flame

Orlampaland is more than a place; it’s a vision stitched together from the sunrises of Florida’s east coast, the noontime bustle of Lakeland, and the fiery sunsets over Tampa Bay and the Gulf. Its burgers cooked over open flames with live music accompanying, it’s neighbors volunteering at Feeding Tampa Bay and Hands On Orlando, it’s the laughter echoing from Lakeland Community Theatre. It’s history retold as satire, like the day everyone was handed a bazooka “for your heritage.” Its philosophy whispered in roadside metaphors; Treat yourself like I-4, always under construction, always moving forward, no matter how inconvenient it feels to others. There are many dreams but if there’s a dream that captures the heart of Orlampaland, it’s the Olympic flame.

This corridor has chased the flame before. In 2000, Florida 2012 put forward a bold bid to host the Summer Olympics, tying Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Orlando together as one Olympic region. The plan imagined new stadiums, shared infrastructure, and a corridor wide celebration of sport. The U.S. ultimately chose New York, but the effort proved what this region could imagine when it worked as one.

That spark didn’t go out. In 2024, Orlando hosted the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, the first time Florida selected America’s Olympic runners. Downtown streets filled with fans, volunteers, broadcasters, and community pride. It wasn’t just a race, it was a rehearsal for something bigger.

And now, the whispers are back; the idea of a Florida Olympics in the 2040s, this time smarter and leaner. Only a handful of overbuilt stadiums, and the venues we already have. Raymond James Stadium, Tropicana Field, Amway Center, Exploria Stadium, Joker Marchant Stadium tied together with upgraded transit. Imagine I-4 not as a headache but as an Olympic artery.

Why here? Orlampaland already lives on the world’s stage. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Lightning, and Rays make “Champa Bay” a household phrase. The Orlando Magic, Orlando City SC, and Orlando Pride wave their banners across global broadcasts. Lakeland welcomes the Detroit Tigers every spring, keeping baseball’s heartbeat alive in Central Florida.

We are already a sports nation inside a nation. The Olympics would only make it official.

Picture the torch carried down Highway 60 at dawn. Opening ceremonies blazing at Raymond James. Soccer under purple smoke at Exploria. Gymnastics dazzling in Orlando. Baseball echoing in Lakeland. Closing ceremonies with the sun dropping into the Gulf.

And long after the medals are won, the legacy remains: upgraded trains and buses, youth sports funding, international attention, and a corridor that has proven it can dream together, build together, and cheer together.

Make Believe Better

This is Orlampaland; a place of satire and sincerity, burgers and bonfires, local theaters and Stanley Cups. But above all, it is a place unafraid to dream big enough to host the world.

One flame. Three cities. One region.
